The Châtelet Theatre (Paris) to be restored to its Napoleon III style

The Theatre de Chatelet will be closed from March this year for major renovation. The construction site will be led by the architect Philippe Pumain who has already realized the renovation of Luxor.

“We are going to put the Grand Salle back to its appearance of 1862. Over time, the room has become a bit dull and had become a little dramatic and sad,” noted Jean-Luc Choplin with regret. “Whereas in fact it is a very bright and joyful room with very lively motifs”. In addition to new silver leaf gilding, the chandelier will be restored and a skylight added to the central ceiling.

The Grand Foyer will return to its Napoleon III style. Extensive studies of the various layers of paint have made it possible to trace the imitation marble effects that decorated the walls originally. This will be the spirit of the new Châtelet visible to the public in 2019 after this renovation.
