It is always interesting when new memoirs are published on our period. And these are no exception. James Lowry was an Irish surgeon working in the British navy and as such had first hand experience of not only British operations in Egypt but also Naples during Nelson's time there. Prospective readers who, in view of the title, Fiddlers and Whores, expect a racy read might be disappointed, by Lowry writes well and his stories are never boring. This book edited by John Millyard is a welcome addition to the memoir literature.
Includes both notes and index.
