Cinco de Mayo 2012

2012 is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, an important date in the history of Mexico. This year's Cinco de Mayo celebrations are particularly special, and there is a huge amount of activity taking place, in Mexico, across the world, and online. The Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia has published online eleven lithographs – taken from Constantino Escalante's book Las Glorias Nacionales – which date from August 1862, just three months after the battle.

Readers can continue their online visit with a virtual tour of the Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, dedicated to the various different foreign invasions into Mexican territory, including the events of the French campaign of 1862-1867. A brief rundown of the museum's collection of Second Empire related objects can be found on the Milenio website.

Spanish speaking visitors can view a short video put together on the battle by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, whilst those in need of more short features can take a look at the official 5 de Mayo Puebla 150 años Youtube page, which includes introductory presentations on the history and the city behind the battle.
